My $3000+ Mistake (and How to Avoid It)

If you are at the very beginning of your starting your online business, you may not have heard of WordPress nor Kajabi. However, I guarantee that these are two important platforms to research before building your website.

So, what are WordPress and Kajabi and why should you care?

WordPress is a content management system.  In its' infancy, it was known as a blogging platform similar to Google's Blogger but it so much more than that.  Anyone with an idea or a passion around a specific topic could "blog" or write articles about a topic.

The number of blogs is too numerous to count but there are some that will teach you how to cook, how to sew, how to fix cars, care for those with special needs and on and on.

Now, WordPress is often used for general websites that include blogging as a component or another page of the site. WordPress is FREE in the respect that the software is included with many hosting platforms as Inmotion Hosting, Hostgator, Godaddy and more.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kajabi is an all-in-one hosting platform that is geared towards those that want an online business for digital products and services

That is a mouthful but consider this:  Kajabi or New Kajabi as it is sometimes referenced includes:

  • Blogging
  • Video and PDF (product) hosting so you do not need Vimeo Pro, Amazon S3, etc
  • E-mail marketing so you do not need Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, Drip etc.
  • A variety of themes and page templates so you don't need a PageBuilder or Themes
  • Checkout carts and payment processors
  • Opt-In or Leadmagnet options so you do not need LeadPages, Opt-in Monster, etc.
  • Pipelines aka Sales Funnels pre-built for you!!
  • Automatic Backups
  • Built-In Security
  • Membership site options so you do not need Memberium, WishList Member, etc
  • Shopping Cart
  • E-Course/LMS options so you do not need LearnDash or other LMS options.
  • So much more!

Components of a Business Site

For any business website, certain components are needed. The look-and-feel of any website is typically determined by the theme. There are many free themes available for WordPress but for a more professional look, premium themes can be purchased and/or customized to anyone's liking.

Key Website Pieces for Successful Online Digital Business

Additionally, FREE and Premium Plugins or add-ons can be, well added for more features.  There are plugins that address backups; e-mail forms, Membership SitesLMS (Learning Management Systems), payment gateways, shopping cartssecurity and a host of features that are too many to list.

By using Kajabi, all of these items and more are already included.

When it comes to add-ons that would be key to any successful online business, the following are needed:

  • Lead Magnet/Lead Pages - Opt-in methods to build your mailing list. Example: You have a free PDF (or lead magnet) that visitors opt-in to receive via a form.
  • Payment Gateway - Gateways process the payment. Most common are PayPal and Stripe
  • Shopping Cart - Carts display products for sale. Many are customizable with Guarantees, Testimonials and more. Common carts include ThriveCart and SamCart
  • E-Mail Automation (not just marketing) -- An E-mail list allows a business to continually communicate with its customers and introduce new products.
  • Membership - Memberships protect content for paying customers. Memberium, MemberPress, Member Pro and many more.

When FREE Is Not Really FREE

This list is not everything but I want to paint a very realistic picture of what it takes to operate a business with WordPress.

I love WordPress but I no longer use it for my online business.

I spent more than $3000 plus countless hours trying to learn how to use all the tools!!

Instead of focusing on creating a product, I was spending valuable time learning how to integrate solutions and plugins; time figuring out which plugin to choose and the countless hours trying to learn how to use each plugin, theme and more.  Arrrgh!!!

If I had understood all the pieces that I would need to run an online business and how much it would cost, I would have chosen Kajabi sooner. Don't make my mistake!

Below, are a list of plugins that I purchased for WordPress.  The developers are great and the plugins are awesome but I can honestly say that focusing on the tools instead of a product not only cost me money but time.

Cost Comparison of Kajabi vs WordPress

Eventually, I was introduced to Kajabi.  I signed up for the trial and I quickly discovered how easy it was to focus on creating content.

The free training walked me through using the Kajabi interface and allowed me to focus on creating consulting/coaching services, e-courses and other online products.

Kajabi included everything that I needed and with a click of a button, I could set up sales funnels within a few minutes.

These pipelines, as they are called, create the sales and check-out pages, email templates, opt-in forms and more.

All you have to do is fill in the content!!

Here are the pipelines to-date.

In this example, not only do you see the flow for creating your sales funnel but there is a video explaining how everything works!!

Is Kajabi Right for You? Coaches? MLM's?

I get this question from coaches and trainers a lot.  My answer is it depends.  I know that answer sucks but consider this.

If you have the ability to meet with a customer online and charge for it, then "yes", Kajabi can work for you.  Please do not forget about group coaching too.

As of this writing, most of my earnings via my Kajabi site have been from consulting work, not courses.  Coaching is definitely a viable option.

I also get the same question from those that are involved in MLM's or multi-level marketing businesses.  This too is an "it depends" answer.  If your primary focus is to use the marketing material and often-times website from your MLM, then Kajabi is not for you.  WordPress may be a better option to compliment the MLM's infrastructure but most likely, you will not need anything else.

However, if you are building something bigger than your MLM, Kajabi may work for you.  As an example, let's say you are part MLM that sells vitamin supplements for athletes. Often, this MLM will have a website or portal for your customers to buy products.

Next, you decide to create an online business about sports nutrition and the products of the MLM are just a piece of the overall business.  Your online business may contain group coaching, online courses or a membership site.  In this example, then Kajabi would definitely help you.
